Welcome Hoosier fans to this gameday edition of Banner Morning — your weekday rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Michael Dugan, filling in for Jerod Morris, on the morning of IU-Wichita State.
In gameday news …
Indiana will take on the Shockers of Wichita State tonight at 7 pm on ESPN with Bob Wischusen and Dan Dakich on the call, and as always, you can listen to Fisch’s call on the TuneIn Radio app.
In terms of the opponent, IU is facing a team that has won 8 of 9, with the previous two coming on the road. Leading scorer Markis McDuffie is leading the charge for the team, scoring in double figures in every game since February 23, including an 18 point average through the first two rounds of the NIT.
They’re also getting a nice burst from Jaime Echenique, who is on a roll right now shooting 15-18 for the tournament. IU is going to have its hands full down low with him.
Now, let’s look at some keys to victory for IU …
First, IU has to do its best to own the paint. Echenique is scoring at a really efficient clip, but the Shockers have also dominated on the glass recently. They’ve outrebounded their two opponents by a margin of 22 through the first two rounds of the tournament. Whoever is on the floor for IU has to crash the glass to prevent second-chance points for Wichita State.
Second, force them into tough shots. They average over 20 three-point attempts per game in the NIT, and haven’t hit them at an alarmingly high rate. They also check in at 132 in KenPom’s offensive efficiency rankings. If the Hoosiers’ defense plays like it is capable of playing, they should put themselves in a good position to win.
Also, on Monday, Archie Miller provided an update on Romeo’s health. He’s still in treatment and still listed as day-to-day, and there is no real update on his status for the game tonight. So, nothing really new there.
In recruiting news …
Indiana filled a roster spot with a commitment from preferred walk-on Nathan Childress of Zionsville. Childress was originally committed to Bethel College, but decommitted this past season.
During his senior season, he averaged 14.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, shooting 58 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from three.
Nathan has an injury-riddled past, and he said he thinks he was a little undervalued in the recruiting process, according to an article in the Indy Star. He also had a great quote about being a team player, saying “If playing time does come about, that’s great. I just want to be able to help Indiana. I’ve always liked IU so it didn’t require much thinking.”
I’m sure everyone at IU is just as excited to have Natan as Nathan is to join the team. Congratulations to him on earning a spot on next year’s team.
