Welcome Hoosier fans to this gameday edition of Banner Morning — your weekday rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Michael Dugan, filling in for Jerod Morris, the morning of IU-St. Francis
In gameday news …
Indiana will take on the Red Flash of St. Francis tonight at 7 pm on ESPN with Dave Feldman on the call, and as always, you can listen to Fisch’s call on the TuneIn Radio app.
In terms of the opponent, IU will face a very guard-centric team in St. Francis. Despite their heavy guard use, they rebound the ball well, especially on the offensive end – posting a top 30 offensive rebounding percentage in the entire country.
The Red Flash are led by Jamaal King and Keith Braxton, who both play well over 30 minutes per game and combine for over 30 points per game. Braxton also nearly averages a double-double, with over 16 points and 9.8 boards per game.
Where they struggle, however, is the defensive end. They rank outside the top 200 in the country, according to KenPom, in defensive efficiency, opponent 2-point percentage, and opponent 3-point percentage. IU fans would certainly love to see the Hoosiers connect from beyond the arc in this one.
Now, let’s look at some keys to victory for IU …
The first one is Juwan Morgan. St. Francis does not overwhelm opponents down low, and if he can assert himself early, the Indiana offense will be able to go through him. The second key is the guard play on the defensive end. The St. Francis guards are the engine to the offense – the team will go as far as Braxton and King take it. If Rob and Al can defend like they are capable of defending, Indiana will be in good shape in this one.
Also of note – during media availability on Monday, Archie Miller said that Romeo is day-to-day with a back injury, but as of Monday, expects him to play against St. Francis.
In Hoosier birthdays …
We have three birthdays to highlight today.
Don Schlundt was born March 15th, 1933 and would have been 86 this past Friday. He helped lead the Hoosiers to the 1953 national championship, and left IU as the school’s all-time leading scorer until Steve Alford passed him 32 years later.
Everett Dean was born March 18th, 1893. He was an all-American in 1921, and is the only coach in history to be elected to both the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, and the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
And, Scott May is celebrating his 65th birthday today. He was the national player of the year for the perfect 1976 championship team, won a gold medal for Team USA the same year, and was the second overall pick in the NBA draft that same summer. Happy birthday to those three great Hoosiers!
And, one more note – the IU women’s team earned a 10 seed in the NCAA tournament and will face Texas in the opening round. A great season continues with hopefully a few games left.
