On today’s Banner Morning:
• Previewing IU’s next opponent
• Some great Devonte Green quotes
• Hoosier birthdays
Welcome Hoosier fans to this Monday edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Michael Dugan, filling in for Jerod Morris, and we are just one day away from IU-Wichita State.
In team news …
The Shockers defeated Clemson on Sunday afternoon, and punched their ticket to Bloomington for an NIT quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday. The game will tip off at 7 pm on ESPN with a trip to New York City on the line.
Let’s get a brief look at what Wichita State brings to the table. First off, they will be playing their third straight road game in the NIT after defeating Furman and Clemson. They are led by Markis McDuffie, who is averaging 18 points per game through the first two rounds of the tournament. Jaime Echenique is also having a good little stretch, averaging 17 points per game compared to just 9.1 during the regular season. The 6-foot-11-inch forward is 15-18 shooting during the tournament, and will provide a consistent presence down low for Gregg Marshall’s squad.
The Shockers are playing solid basketball right now, winning 8 of their last 9. That one loss was a 3-point loss to a solid Cincinnati in the semifinals of their conference tournament. The Hoosiers will be in for a 40 minute fight on Tuesday.
In case you missed it …
Devonte Green had another great performance on Saturday in Indiana’s win against Arkansas. You probably didn’t miss that, but you may have missed some of his postgame comments. Cameron Drummond of the Indiana Daily Student focused his postgame piece on Green’s day, mentality and hot shooting. On the team’s mentality, specifically himself and Rob Phinisee, Green said, with his arm wrapped around Rob, “We’re kind of like Batman and Robin right now, we’re killing it…alright, we’re Batman and Batman.”
Archie Miller had high praise for Devonte as well, saying “He’s our most important sort of cog in the wheel right now. He’s just playing the game with freedom. I think right now, he’s just playing to win.”
Devonte also had some good stuff to say about his recent shooting streak, saying “Even if my shot goes out, it’s like, it was this close to going in, so I know the next one is going in.”
In fact, a picture of one of his shots went viral on Twitter after the game, but not for the reason you might expect. @LakeShowYo on Twitter tweeted out that picture of Devonte, pointing out that one of the tattoos he has on his arm is a cheat code for unlimited ammo in the video game Grand Theft Auto. He’s definitely displaying that freedom to shoot that coach Miller was talking about, after all.
In Hoosier birthdays …
Mike Woodson celebrated his 61st birthday on Sunday. He was a 2,000 point scorer, an NIT champion and a Big Ten champion at Indiana before spending a decade in the NBA as a player, and almost 3 decades as a coach.
Steve Ahlfeld celebrated his birthday on Sunday, as well. Steve was a 3-time academic all-Big Ten honoree and won three conference championships in Bloomington. Happy birthday to those two great Hoosiers!
