• A promising offensive statistic
• Big Ten Tournament schedule
Welcome Hoosier fans to this Monday edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Michael Dugan, filling in for Jerod Morris, the morning after IU defeated Rutgers.
In team news …
The Hoosiers fell behind 5-0 quickly, then went on a 14-2 run and never looked back, en route to a big win over Rutgers on senior day. Despite playing most of the first half without Rob Phinisee and Justin Smith due to foul trouble, Indiana didn’t hesitate – in part thanks to Devonte Green and Juwan Morgan.
From pretty much start to finish, the Hoosiers controlled this one. Rutgers was within single digits a few times, but quite honestly, it never really felt like Indiana was going to lose control of the game. The Hoosiers finished with 89 points on 53% shooting and just 4 made threes on the afternoon. They did get out-rebounded, but it still felt as if they dominated the game in the paint.
In player news …
Rather fittingly, it was Juwan Morgan’s day inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. He started a perfect 10-for-10 from the field, finished 11-for-13, hauled in 7 rebounds, and walked off the court to a raucous ovation from the crowd.
Romeo had 20 points, and had almost half of those 20 come at the free throw line. He also showed some great hustle on the glass, grabbing 6 rebounds.
Devonte Green provided a really good spark off the bench, too, finishing with 16 points.
And in off-the-court player news, a former Hoosier celebrated a birthday over the weekend – happy 40th birthday to Kirk Haston.
Now quickly let’s go around the horn and get some reaction to Indiana’s win …
Alex Bozich of Inside the Hall wrote about Indiana’s response to Rutgers’ opening 5-0 run, leaving little doubt as to who wanted the win more. He also provides some statistics, including Indiana’s whopping 1.27 points per possession, the team’s second highest in conference play.
In Big Ten Tournament news…
It’s official – Indiana will face Ohio State on Thursday of the Big Ten Tournament at 12:30 eastern. The winner of that one will face off against Michigan State, which probably gives IU fans some mixed feelings if the Hoosiers were to beat the Buckeyes on Thursday. On one hand, you obviously already took the Spartans down twice this season. But on the other, beating the same team, in this case a really good team, three times in one season is no easy feat.
Most bracketologists have IU right on the bubble heading into the week. It certainly doesn’t help IU’s case seeing a handful of mid-major conference favorites lose in their conference tournaments this week, but Indiana still controls its own destiny. There are few teams in the conference that have had a better two weeks than Indiana. So if you’re a believer in momentum, you have every right to feel good about this upcoming week for the Hoosiers.
