Welcome to another edition of Banner Morning. We are now 16 days away from Hoosier Hysteria.
In team news …
Clif Marshall tweeted out a video on Wednesday showing a small, black device being inserted into a small pouch on the backs of what appear to be specially made workout undershirts.
This text description accompanied his tweet: “Setting up a new ‘tool in our toolbox’ that will track 35 variables during practice including; distance, speed, heart rate, calories & work load. All in an effort to ensure player health & improve athletic performance.”
Also, Andy Katz chose 15 freshmen who can make an immediate impact in college basketball. Not surprisingly, Romeo is high on the list, at #4.
In recruiting news …
USA Basketball announced 87 high school prospects it is inviting to its junior national team mini camp in October. Among the IU targets invited:
- Class of 2019: Isaiah Stewart, Matthew Hurt, and Keion Brooks. (Trayce Jackson-Davis was not invited.)
- Class of 2020: Caleb Love and Ethan Morton
- Class of 2021: Terrence Clarke
Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs reported that Indiana had an in-home visit with Trayce Jackson-Davis scheduled for Wednesday.
In IU athletics Hall of Fame news …
Indiana announced its 2018 Hall of Fame class on Wednesday. The headliner is Brian Evans, who redshirted during the Final Four season of 1992 and then was an impact player in each of his four seasons from 1993-1996.
Evans joins five other former IU athletes who will be inducted at the annual Hall of Fame dinner on Friday, November 9th.
And we have a birthday today …
Hey — it’s the aforementioned Brian Evans. He turns 45 today.
Evans, from Terre Haute, made sizable jumps in production in each of his four years at Indiana.
He was a freshman on Bob Knight’s last great Indiana team — the 1992-93 squad that spent most of the year ranked #1. That year, he scored 5.3 points per game as a key reserve.
With each successive season, Evans’ role as a scorer expanded. He scored 11.9 points per game as a sophomore, then 17.4 points per game as a junior, and then closed his IU career by scoring 21.2 points per game while also contributing 7 rebounds and 4 assists per game en route to being named Big Ten Player of the Year and a 3rd-Team All American.
He was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic and enjoyed a 10-year professional career in the NBA and overseas.
Happy birthday Brian — and congratulations.
