Transcript

Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.

I’m Cameron Drummond and IU is getting it done in the classroom.

Sometimes lost in the importance of wins and losses for the student-athletes of the IU men’s basketball program is exactly that: Their standing as college students first and college athletes second.

The NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate, or APR, serves as a measure of just how well collegiate athletic programs take care of the educational aspect of the student-athlete experience, and earlier this week it was announced that Indiana has continued to make strides in this endeavor.

For the second straight year, IU men’s basketball’s multi-year APR score, which determines eligibility to compete in the NCAA Tournament, increased.

The multi-year APR went from being 944 in the 2017-18 academic year to 959 for the 2018-19 academic year, well above the APR threshold of 930 that teams need to meet in order to qualify for NCAA men’s basketball postseason events.

This APR jump was bolstered by the men’s basketball program posting a perfect APR score of 1,000 for the 2018-19 academic year, representing continued growth in this area for the Hoosiers since Archie Miller was named head coach in March 2017.

Looking at things from a national perspective, IU’s multi-year APR score of 959 ranks in the 30th to 40th percentile among all men’s college basketball programs. In the Big Ten, the lowest multi-year APR score was 948, belonging to both Illinois and Penn State.

Across the board Indiana posted strong APR numbers for all 22 of its athletic programs for the 2018-19 academic year.

IU men’s basketball was one of 13 programs to receive a perfect 1,000 APR score for that year, and all 22 of IU’s athletic programs met the 930 APR mark to be eligible to participate in NCAA championships for the 2020-21 season.
As a whole, the combined APR score for all of IU Athletics was 979 for the 2018-19 academic year.
