Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Cameron Drummond and Trayce Jackson-Davis is returning to the Hoosiers.
The early entry deadline for NCAA men’s college basketball players to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft came and went over the weekend.
While plenty of decisions were made in this regard by Big Ten stars like Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois and Luka Garza of Iowa, there was one important omission from the group of elite Big Ten players who are at least testing the waters of the NBA Draft process.
With a tweet sent Sunday afternoon, star Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis confirmed he would be returning to Bloomington for his sophomore season.
It’s an unsurprising move from Jackson-Davis, who was always expected to remain with the Hoosiers at least through next season, but a welcomed one nonetheless for IU fans.
CNHI Sports Indiana reporter Kevin Brockway had an NBA scout tell him that Jackson-Davis was making the right decision by returning to school for his sophomore season.
“He’s got an NBA body, improve the skillset and tear up the Big Ten during your sophomore year,” Brockway tweeted that the scout told him about Jackson-Davis.
Jackson-Davis started all 32 games for Indiana last season while averaging a team-best 13.5 points. He also averaged 8.4 rebounds per contest and was named a third-team All-Big Ten selection by the league’s coaches and media and was selected to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team by the league’s coaches.
His choice to not at least test the NBA Draft waters means that Indiana will have no early entrants into the NBA Draft this offseason, leaving recent graduates De’Ron Davis and Devonte Green as the only draft-eligible IU players from last season’s team.
This forms a stark contrast to the 2019 offseason, in which 4 IU players — Green, Romeo Langford, Al Durham and Justin Smith — all had their names on the draft’s early entry list.
Assuming no further transfers take place for Indiana this offseason, the Hoosiers will only lose Damezi Anderson from the group of potential returning players for the 2020-2021 season, along with gaining the arrivals of Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway, Jordan Geronimo and potentially Khristian Lander.
