In today’s edition of Banner Morning:
• Romeo Langford makes first NBA start for the Boston Celtics
Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Cameron Drummond and Romeo Langford has his first NBA start.
It’s that time of the NBA season in which injuries and trades are making players fluid pieces in lineups, and that was reflected on Wednesday night in Boston.
The Celtics had a bevy of injuries to deal with ahead of their home game against the Orlando Magic.
Marcus Smart dealt with a quad injury, Daniel Theis had an ankle problem, Kemba Walker had a knee injury and Rob Williams had an issue with his hip. All four players did not play for the Celtics, paving the way for former Indiana Hoosier Romeo Langford to make his first NBA start.
Langford ended up playing 28 minutes in the game. He scored 6 points on 3 of 4 shooting from the field and gathered 1 rebound and recorded 1 block as the Celtics defeated the Magic 116 to 100.
Langford’s defensive ability was also on display during the Boston win, as the No. 14 overall pick from last summer’s NBA Draft helped draw an important offensive foul on Orlando guard Markelle Fultz in the closing minutes of the game. Langford also had a late-game dunk to help seal the win for Boston.
Postgame, Langford was able to reflect on the hours and moments leading up to his first NBA start.
He said he got butterflies when Boston head coach Brad Stevens told him he was starting the game, and during pregame introductions Langford said he couldn’t hear the public address announcer, only hearing the “Indiana” when they announced him in the starting lineup.
Langford’s parents were also shocked that he was in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s game, and when he notified them pregame of the big news, they weren’t even sure which team he was playing for.
“They thought I was in Maine,” Langford said, referring to the Boston G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.
“My mom was like, ‘You starting for Boston or Maine?”
Congratulations on your first NBA start Romeo, hopefully the first of many more to come!
