Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Dylan Wallace and we don’t know when Devonte Green will be back.
After pulling off a crossover in the Nebraska game, Green then turned it over and hit the floor, coming up pretty limp after that moment. He checked out of the game and didn’t return.
Archie Miller said after the game that he asked Green what was wrong, and Green told him his Achilles hurt. On Miller’s weekly radio show with Don Fischer at the Holiday Inn, a fan asked Miller about Green, and he said he has a sore Achilles, which is probably built up from the numerous lower leg injuries Green has had earlier this year.
To begin the year, Green was dealing with a hamstring injury. He eventually recovered from that, and his breakout performance of the year came in his fifth appearance, and that was when he dropped 30 points in the win over Florida State.
Since then, Green really hasn’t done much. He scored 10 points in the loss to Wisconsin and just six points against UConn. Before he got hurt against Nebraska, he was 2-7 in 14 minutes with five points.
Without Green, Indiana still managed to sneak by Nebraska with big thanks to Trayce Jackson-Davis and Rob Phinisee.
Green’s injury continues the trend of Indiana failing to have a healthy backcourt. First, it was Green and Phinisee, then it was just Phinisee, and once Phinisee finally got back, now Green is down again.
The two constants in the backcourt have been Al Durham and Armaan Franklin, and as good of moments that they have had, Green and Phinisee are the two best backcourt players.
Green and Phinisee’s health will be key for Indiana to be successful this season.
Green is the X-factor for Indiana, and although his offense is sporadic, the Hoosiers need a guy who can light up a team for 30 like he did against the Seminoles.
Although no word is official, it doesn’t seem like Green is going to play against Notre Dame in the Crossroads Classic on Saturday. Miller said during his radio show that they hope to get Green healthy will all of the days they have available for this Christmas break before Big Ten hits in January.
Green was at the Lakers and Pacers game on Tuesday night in Bankers Life Fieldhouse to watch his brother Danny Green play. Green went to the game with De’Ron Davis, and they all took a picture after the game.
Speaking on the topic of the Pacers and injuries, Victor Oladipo joined Undisputed last week with Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe on Fox, and said he is optimistic to return this season after rupturing his quad last year.
