Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Dylan Wallace and let’s take a look at Indiana’s opponent for tonight.
Indiana will take on Princeton in the second game of the Indiana Challenge, and it will be broadcast at 7 p.m. eastern on Big Ten Network with Brandon Gaudin and Shon Morris on the call.
Princeton is 0-3 to start this year, but are led by three pretty talented players.
Richmond Aririguzoh, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound senior, is averaging 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in 32 minutes per game. Archie Miller has said how he will be the first defensive test of the season for the IU frontcourt. In 23 post-ups, Aririguzoh has scored 19 points, which is pretty impressive.
Jaelin Llewellyn is also averaging 17.3 points through three games and the 6-foot-2 sophomore is a high usage player. According to Synergy Sports, Llewellyn has been terrific in ball screen situations with 30 points in 26 possessions.
Then there’s Drew Friberg, a 6-foot-7 forward who is playing a team-high 36 minutes per game and is shooting 41 percent on threes. His 13.3 points per game are third on the team.
At the helm for Princeton basketball is coach Mitch Henderson, who is in his ninth season for the Tigers. He has one NCAA tournament appearance in his tenure back in 2017. Princeton has five finishes in the top 100 of the KenPom ratings under Henderson.
Henderson has some Indiana in his blood as he graduated high school from Culver Academies, the same place IU 2020 commit Trey Galloway plays. Henderson played basketball, football and baseball in high school and was actually drafted by the New York Yankees in 1994 before finishing his education at Princeton in 1998. Henderson also coached in the Big Ten, serving as an assistant at Northwestern from 2000-2011.
According to KenPom, Indiana is favored to win this game by 19 points. A win tonight will push the Hoosiers to 5-0 while Princeton would fall to 0-4. But, anything can happen, and Princeton is probably Indiana’s most talented opponent thus far.
Before today’s game, Dawson Garcia will be making his college decision at 4:30 p.m. live on CBS Sports HQ. He’ll be choosing between Indiana, Marquette, Memphis and Minnesota.
If Garcia chooses Indiana, he’ll take the last scholarship spot for 2020, joining Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway and Jordan Geronimo. Garcia is a 6-foot-11, five-star power forward, so adding him to an already guard slash wing heavy class would be beneficial for the Hoosiers and add some versatility.
Lastly, today is De’Ron Davis’ birthday, so we’d like to wish the senior forward a happy 23rd birthday. Happy birthday De’Ron!
