In today’s edition of Banner Morning:
• Bob Knight makes appearance at The Bluebird
• Devonte Green returns
• Indiana rolls to 4-0
Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Dylan Wallace and it was a busy weekend for Indiana basketball.
Some of the bigger news of the weekend was when Bob Knight made an appearance at The Bluebird for the Hoosier Hysterics homecoming podcast.
Knight went on stage with chants of “Bobby” and “Thank you, coach” echoing through the venue. The former Indiana head coach made multiple jokes up on stage, saying how nobody in attendance would ever be able to play defense for his team.
Knight also got emotional at times, thanking the fans for their tremendous support over the years. He said, “This was a great place to coach, and it was an opportunity to coach a lot of great kids.”
He was asked when fans will see him in Assembly Hall again, and joked, “Let’s go tomorrow.” Tomorrow would have been yesterday, and the women’s basketball team, ranked No. 21 in the country, played Jackson State and won 91-51, but Knight was not in attendance.
It’s only a matter of time before Hoosier fans hope to see “The General” back in the place he helped raise three banners in.
The same day Knight was seen at The Bluebird, the Hoosiers kicked off the Indiana Classic with a 38-point victory over Troy.
Rob Phinisee was held out due to strep throat, but Devonte Green made his season debut after missing the first three games with a hamstring injury.
Green didn’t shoot the ball great, going just 2-8 from the field, but he had four assists and just one turnover in his 20 minutes. Green simply said after the game, “I feel good.”
Justin Smith led the team in scoring with 22 points, and Al Durham, Trayce Jackson-Davis and Damezi Anderson all scored in double figures as well. Jackson-Davis had his second career double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Indiana is now 4-0 on the season, and is one of five Big Ten teams still undefeated through the first two weeks of college basketball, joining Ohio State, Maryland, Penn State and Michigan.
The Indiana Classic will have three more games to be played in it, featuring Princeton, Louisiana Tech and South Dakota State.
Those will be the final three easier games before the schedule starts to get difficult. UConn beat No. 15 Florida yesterday by three, and Florida State also beat Florida earlier this year. Indiana will see both UConn and Florida State in early December.
Lastly, yesterday was Armaan Franklin’s birthday, so we’d like to wish the freshman guard a happy 19th birthday. Happy birthday Armaan!
