In today’s edition of Banner Morning:
• Discussing Devonte Green’s recent play for Indiana
Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Cameron Drummond and let’s talk about Devonte Green.
Ever since his 30-point outburst against Florida State inside Assembly Hall in early December, Devonte Green hasn’t been the consistent scoring presence that Indiana has needed this season.
This has been reflected in a myriad of ways, from the types of shots that Green is taking to his shooting percentage itself, and even the amount of playing time that Archie Miller has given him as conference play has evolved.
Since the calendar has turned to 2020, Green has played in 10 games for the Hoosiers. He started the first two, and has come off the bench ever since.
Four of those last 10 games have seen Green score double-digit points, including 19 and 13-point outings against Ohio State. However, there have also been numerous low points for Green.
The other six games in this stretch have all seen Green score four points or less, and he’s missed five or more shots in six of these games, including a 1-7 effort in Saturday’s disappointing home loss to Purdue.
It seems that the statement Archie Miller made following that win over Florida State has finally come to fruition: Miller said Green will have “feast or famine” type performances for Indiana, and while Miller was hopeful for more of the former, it appears the latter has taken over for the senior point guard.
This also doesn’t account for the qualities that should be brought to the table by a point guard, and a senior leader in general, on this Indiana team.
During a radio show appearance Monday afternoon with former IU player and coach Dan Dakich, IU radio broadcaster Don Fischer said that current Indiana players don’t seem to be carrying the same importance about the name on the front of their jerseys as teams from years’ past.
In social media circles in particular, Green’s name is often floated in this sense, thanks in part to his penchant for turnovers and taking difficult shots.
There is still time for Green, and his senior teammate De’Ron Davis and the entire Hoosier ballclub to turn things around, though.
The arrival of No. 21 Iowa to Bloomington for a Thursday-night matchup offers another chance at redemption for both Green and the Hoosiers, who have been desperately short in the scoring department during their last three losses.
With eight games left in the regular season, four coming at home and four coming on the road, now would be an opportune time for Green to reignite his senior season.
