In today’s edition of Banner Morning:
• Trayce’s case for Big Ten Freshman of the Year
• More Bob Knight reaction
• Indiana’s lack of togetherness
Welcome Hoosier fans to today’s edition of Banner Morning — your daily rundown of IU basketball news and notes.
I’m Dylan Wallace and Trayce Jackson-Davis is the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
It was announced yesterday that Indiana freshman Trayce Jackson-Davis won the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award. This is the fourth time Jackson-Davis has received this honor this season.
Indiana only had one game this week, and it was a 12-point loss to Purdue at home. As disappointing a loss it was, Jackson-Davis had a good game. He finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks.
Archie Miller was asked about Jackson-Davis on his radio show last night with Don Fischer, and he said, “At what point in time are you not a freshman anymore and just a really good player on your team?”
However, Miller did note that he thinks Jackson-Davis needs to get better defensively and be more assertive on offense.
It’s no secret this season has taken a turn for the worse in these last couple of weeks, but if there is one bright spot, it has been no question the play of Jackson-Davis.
Jackson-Davis leads the Big Ten freshmen in scoring, blocks and free throws. He averages 12.7 points per game in the Big Ten, has the top field-goal percentage at 53.5% and averages 1.8 blocked shots per game.
With these stats, Jackson-Davis has to be the front runner for winning Big Ten Freshman of the Year. It’s also been confirmed that Jackson-Davis intends to return for his sophomore season with Indiana, which was expected, but good that he made it official.
Other topics discussed on Miller’s radio show were more comments on the return of Bob Knight. Miller said, “It’s a great step in Coach finishing out his retirement so to speak in Bloomington, he can come and go as he pleases now, as he eases into his retirement in Bloomington, to be more a part of what we do, that’s a positive.”
Miller also gave some interesting quotes about where his team is right now. He said, “At some point you have to draw the line, if you don’t want to be a part of winning, you have to not be a part of what we are doing.”
All season people have been saying things about not everyone being about the team, and at certain moments it’s been visible. It seemed like Indiana fixed those issues in the middle of January, but now the team is experiencing them again.
In regards to the tough game coming up against No. 21 Iowa, Miller said, “We have to line up Thursday night with those guys. If it’s six of them it’s six of them. If it’s 11 of them, it’s 11 of them.”
